Yesterday, we discovered that a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in Gasaprilla Sound, who we have named “Nori Zith,” apparently has an entanglement scar on her peduncle.
A blunt “crack” on the top of her peduncle may indicate that a rope was once tangled around her, likely cutting into her flesh and leaving a possibly permanent scar. (Photos below).
The photos were taken in January 2017, but we didn’t realize the scar until this month.
Nori Zith also has a dramatically damaged dorsal fin that was clearly damaged by a boat propeller, so there is a possibility that this is a propeller scar.
We’ve been looking around online, but haven’t found any reports of an entangled dolphin being spotted in the area, and we don’t know how long ago this scar was inflicted upon Nori Zith.
Whatever happened, we are very glad that she is okay, as she is currently in the process of raising a calf, “Morning Glory,” who is just over a year old.
